Project Illumination was founded in Aurora, Colorado in 2005, through a U.S. Department of Justice grant, and is a collaborative, ongoing, community-wide partnership effort to shed light on the impact of sexual violence against people with developmental disabilities. The Project Illumination goal is to replicate programs across the country, through statewide collaborative efforts. In Pennsylvania, the partners are The Arc of Pennsylvania, the Disabilities Rights Network of Pennsylvania, the Institute on Disabilities at Temple University, the Office of Mental Health and Substance Abuse, and the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape (PCAR).
Through this collaboration, the Project Illumination Team in PA developed and distributed resource manuals to all local chapters of The Arc, as well as every center of PCAR, located in all 67 counties. The team also developed and presented a workshop at numerous locations around the state in 2006 and 2007 entitled, “Prepare, Prevent and Protect”. Future plans include a video presentation of the training.
